When you have big plans for outdoor areas, you need big equipment. Jones Rental Inc. in Ashland, Ohio, has the equipment you need at decent rental prices. So let's discuss one large project and the tools and equipment Jones has to help you knock them off your to-do list!

Project: A New Brick Patio

This project can be simple enough for the intermediate do-it-yourselfer to tackle, or it can get pretty complex, based on your goals. For this blog though, we are going to keep it simple.

Before you get started, you will need your bricks. If you don't have the storage space to tow them, Jones has trailers available for rent. Now, let's get started. First, you need to excavate the area: 8 inches deep and 6 inches beyond the measured layout of your bricks. To get that job done more quickly than with a shovel, we have a small Kubota U-35 backhoe ready to move earth! You might have to do some of the finer work with a shovel, but you'll be done in a much shorter period of time.

After digging, tamp the dirt down flat. We have a one-man tamper that is perfect for smaller areas.

Next, pour in compactible gravel and rake it smooth. Install paver edging. Then put down a weed barrier and 2 inches of sand on top of that.

Now it is time to lay the bricks. Jones has a brick and block saw so that you can make precise cuts and fit the bricks perfectly into your pattern for your patio. When you finish laying the bricks, sweep more sand into the cracks between them, spray with a hose, then repeat the process. The water will help compact the sand for a tighter fit.

When that is finished, it's time to backfill the edges around your patio with dirt. If there are large pieces, Jones has tillers ready to break it up so you can smooth it out to look beautiful around your new patio.
