Prep Your Yard for Winter!

Can you believe it is October? Here in Ohio, the weather can be a bit unpredictable. Sunny and 70 one day, rainy and 45 the next! When you do catch those mild fall days, it's perfect for taking care of your outdoor space and preparing it for winter and next spring! These jobs will keep your yard looking healthy and beautiful. Take note of these jobs and rent the tools you need before starting!
  1. Sweep Up the Leaves - Give your back a break! Use a lawn vacuum to sweep leaves and small sticks and twigs instead of spending hours raking. You'll get a fine mulch that you can use to cover your garden beds.
  2. Aerate Your Yard - You should cover the lawn completely in one direction and go back over it in a perpendicular motion. A steel spike aerator is ideal for small yards, while a core aerator is designed to handle bigger spaces. Check out the video at the bottom on how to use a Classen Power Aerator!
  3. Clean, Weed and Fertilize - Clean out and weed all of your garden areas. Turn the soil while it's still easy to work and you'll save yourself a lot of backbreaking labor come the spring. Finish by covering the weed-free beds with a layer of organic fertilizer such as chicken or steer manure.
  4. Mulch, Mulch, Mulch - Once the garden beds have been fertilized, cover them with fallen leaves or straw. Put a mulch layer around trees and shrubs to protect them from freezing.
  5. Trim Away - Cut back and shape shrubs, trees and plants, such as hydrangeas, azaleas and rhododendrons.
  6. Clean Up - First, get a power sweeper to sweep up leaves and other loose debris. Then, use a power washer and scrub your sidewalks and driveway clean.
