Power Washing vs. Pressure Washing: What's the Difference?

The difference between pressure washing and power washing can be hard to spot.

We're nearing the end of February, and March is just around the corner. This is the perfect time to start thinking about those outdoor spring projects for your home. As you start planning, you'll want to think about renting any equipment you don't have. If you've already done so, you've likely been recommended power washing and pressure washing equipment for exterior home maintenance. So, what's the difference between the two? 

The difference is mainly the temperature. 

Power washer jets use hot water, while pressure washers do not. A power washer comes in handy if you have an especially tough spot that a pressure washer may not be able to get due to the colder temperature of the water. Hot water generally builds up more pressure than cold water, which allows it to blast with more force at dirty, grimy areas of your surface. You might make this connection when you think about washing dishes or taking a shower. The hot water usually comes out with more force in the shower, and hot water usually works better to clean difficult blemishes on plates and glassware. Power washers are heavier duty. 

The advantage of a pressure washer is that, because the water doesn't heat up to high temperatures, it's generally safer to use, and is universal for many different cleaning jobs, whereas power washers are recommended for cement and sidewalk use. Because it's more gentle, it will be more gentle on your home. So, if your goal is to wash off your exterior walls, you may lean towards a pressure washer.
